Steve Earle, the man behind the Monterey Historic Automobile Races®, which has run at Laguna Seca for the past 36 years, will no longer be in charge. Starting in 2010 SCRAMP, or the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula, will organize a “new event.” Citing an inability to renegotiate a contract that would please all parties concerned lead to a decision to part ways with SCRAMP.
All is not lost, however, as General Racing, Steve Earle’s racing organization, will continue with the Wine Country Classic at Sonoma’s Infineon Raceway with a name change for 2010 to, “The Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival.” Details are still in the works but it will be a sure bet that Sonoma’s venue will continue to include good food from local restaurants and wine from Napa and Sonoma wineries. The Wine Country Classic has run at Infineon every spring for the past 23 years and for Northern California is a premiere event for classic car racing.
Even though Earle will not be running the Monterey Historics anymore he has left an indelible legacy and he has certainly raised the bar in classic motorsport racing in California. SCRAMP will no doubt rise to the challenge and put on a great event as well because it remains a cornerstone for the Monterey Race Week, which takes place every August. Look for a name change in 2011 as the name “Monterey Historic Automobile Races®” is trademarked by General Racing and has allowed SCRAMP a limited one-year use.
