Everyone from Jillian Michaels to Angelina Jolie says it: buy organic. It’s sound advice; most of the regular food in the supermarket arrives drenched in pesticides or hormones, ready to mess with your metabolism and give you wrinkles.

But the price of organic delicacies can also cause wrinkles. Two bucks for an organic pepper?

While the Dirty Dozen stays constant, take comfort: some fruits and vegetables won’t kill you if they were not harvested by the indigenous, fairly-paid family farmers of Fuji.

Like tropical fruit?

Bananas, mangoes, papayas, pineapples, avocados, kiwifruits, and watermelon all made Daily Green’s “Clean 15” as fruits that are safe to buy non-organic.

These fruits are safe because their thick skins keep pesticides away from the meat, especially pineapples and watermelon. As well, fruits that attract fewer diseases recieve fewer pesticide baths. As with all produce, be sure to rinse before eating. That these fruits are all great summer treats is a lovely coincidence.

Need some fooding ideas? Mangos and avocados make a great salsa; kiwis, pineapples, and bananas give yogurt a tropical flair; and papayas taste delightful when smeared with peanut butter.

So munch away and save your pennies for coffee and peaches, which should always be purchased organic.
