Breyers all-new Smooth & Dreamy

Finally, the chain companies appear to be listening. Even more amazing, they appear to be thinking. Breyers has combined its light and natural lines into the new Smooth & Dreamy.

"Light" ice creams have existed for years. Then fat free strutted in its sugar-laden glory, and low carb bounced in with fat-rolls a-jiggle. But as humans we evolve, and soon the phenomenum known as"double-churned" slinked into the lounge, poured itself a martini, and awaited the adoration.

Those who remember their history know that adoration came. Breyers and Dreyers gained thunderous applause for their light ice creams. A decadent bowl of chocolate for 120 calories? What vision!

Luckily, no one thought to look at the ingredients list. They would have seen a football field of chemicals, preservatives, and other names that one will never find in the dictionary.

Not everyone would care. Certain people, after all, equate weight loss with low calories. Yet for those wanting a healthy lifestyle, this mutated ingredient list is something to run from.

Breyers heeded the call of people desirious of non-laboratory ice cream with its All Natural line, which featured lovely ingredients such as milk and eggs. Unfortuneatly for those also watching their waistlines, this milk was whole and these eggs were yolky.

For years there has been a crossroad for those wanting to lose weight and live a healthy, natural lifestyle. Does one opt for high calories and vow to run it off? Does one allow a chemistry set to violate one's belly? The best answer is the former, with a call for moderation. Yet Breyers has just made the balance between health and indulgence a little easier.

Breyer's Smooth & Dreamy features 11 flavors of ice cream with "1/2 the fat and 1/3 fewer calories than regular ice cream." Let's take Creamy Vanilla for a nutritional spin.

Each 1/2 cup serving is 110 calories with 16 grams of carbs, 3.5 grams of fat, and 16 grams of sugar. Its ingredient list is dominated by milk, skim milk, sugar, and cream. This vanilla ice cream is by no means a health food, but it is lighter than its Breyers all-natural cousin, which clocks in at 140 calories and 7 grams of fat. In comparision, the double-churned creamy vanilla has 90 calories, 21 grams of carbs, and sexy ingredients such as polydextrose, propylene glycol, and diglycerides.

To stress once more, ice cream is not a health food. But food should be enjoyed, and everyone needs an indulgence. Breyer's Smooth and Dreamy is a good such indulgence, as it dellivers a light ice cream not riddled with chemicals. And as for taste, reviewers have said that it is indeed very smooth and dreamy.
