If you currently walk, ride a bike or use public transit, you no doubt subscribe to the belief that relying on any of the above to meet typical transportation needs could very well be easier on the wallet and better for the lungs than if driving an internal-combustion-propelled vehicle, all things being equal. Days like National “Dump the Pump” day definitely serve to remind people that “saying ‘no’ to driving” could very well be the one day of the year that others discover what you already have. Whether you’re just observing today in this way, or if you decide to continue your pledge to "Dump the Pump," for a week, a month, a year or from now on, more power to ya!”
By taking part in “Dump the Pump” day and not driving a typical internal-combustion-powered automobile, people all across the country are doing their part to help save the environment and are saving money in the process. How do I know this? Thanks to the American Public Transportation Association’s (APTA) June 18, 2009 "More Than $9,000 Saved Annually by Individuals Who 'Dump the Pump' and Help Save the Environment by Riding Public Transportation" press release, that's how.
Here is some of what was written in the release.
“Taking public transportation is an economical way to travel as individuals choose to ‘dump the pump’ and help save the environment,” expressed APTA. “Riding public transportation reduces carbon emissions and mitigates America's dependence on foreign oil.” And, “Dump the Pump day is a day set aside to encourage people to ride public transportation to save money and protect the environment.”
The specifics
“Riding public transportation can save an individual an average of $9,068 a year based on the June 17, 2009 national average gas price and the unreserved monthly parking rate,” noted the APTA. “This is the highest annual transit savings recorded for this year, as gas prices have increased by 95 cents since January.”
Who thanks you?!
For all those who observed National “Dump the Pump” day in 2009, congratulations! My take is your automobile thanks you, your pocket book thanks you, the environment thanks you and others may be thanking you too. Hat's off to ya! Ch’-ching!
