Spend a couple of hours or a full day on the slow rapids of the Lower Salt River in picturesque Tonto National Forest near Mesa, AZ, just a short drive from downtown Phoenix. Salt River Tubing and Recreation will supply you with the tubes and shuttle service to the riverbank. You bring the sandwiches and drinks -- they even rent tubes fit for coolers! Rental fees are $15 per person/tube. If you bring your own, you can ride the shuttle for $12.

If you wish to enjoy a quiet, leisurely float -- and maybe even see the local wild horses or blue herons, which are often spotted beneath the beautiful mountains surrounding the river -- make your trip on a weekday. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays the river becomes one big floating frat party, complete with beer bongs, cliff diving and girls gone wild.
