Acidic food excess can cause chronic illnesses.

Our body pH is maintained just above 7.0 for optimal health.  When we keep this pH, our metabolism, enzymes, immune system, and repair mechanisms work most effectively. When our pH is kept at this level, it indicates that we have enough buffering minerals to balance the acids in our body.

Imagine your body and its fluids are like the water in a pool. When you open up the pool for the first time in the summer you are likely to find fungus, mold, bacteria and other living organisms. This is likely do to pool levels like PH being out of range. Much like the pool, if the body’s PH is out of balance, meaning too acidic, then it will allow unwanted organisms to grow and immune function will be suppressed while your body is desperately trying to maintain alkalinity.

Acid Alkaline Scale
(scale derived from Food and Healing by Annemarie Colbin)
ACID                                              NEUTRAL                                      ALKALINE

Stomach acid      wine            water         blood         sea water                baking soda

 PH 1                      3.5                 7                 7.5               8.1                                12

**One can of soda is so acidic that it takes approximately 20-30 glasses of water to neutralize the acidity**

The Standard American Diet laden with acid producing foods like caffeine, white flour, sugar, artificial sweeteners, soda, coffee, cake, preservatives, chemicals, hormones, antibiotics, excess dairy is the breeding ground for the body’s inability to maintain a proper PH. The following lists are common complaints and chronic conditions seen in people with excess acidity.

RESULTS OF ACIDIC CONDITION:
  • Cells become sluggish and cannot function properly
  • Wastes build up, toxins are not excreted
  • Nutrients are not properly used
  • Blood homeostasis is affected
  • Inflammation and chronic swelling
  • Water retention
  • Extraction of vital nutrients from cells to fight overcome acidic condition: we pull potassium from our extracellular fluid. When stores have been used up, we begin to pull calcium, magnesium, and other alkalizing minerals from our bones. This is one of the underlying causes in osteoporosis and arthritic conditions
  • Degenerative diseases
  • Muscular aches and pains
  • Difficulty in protein transport and cell conductivity

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF EXCESS ACIDITY?
  • Low energy, chronic fatigue
  • Excess mucous production
  • Nasal congestion
  • Frequent colds, flu, and infections
  • Nervous, stressed, irritable, anxious, agitated
  • Weak nails, dry hair, dry skin
  • Formation of cysts, such as ovarian cysts, polycystic ovaries, benign breast cysts
  • Headaches
  • Joint pain or arthritis
  • Neuritis
  • Muscle pain
  • Feel better after a detoxification diet
  • Hives
  • Leg cramps and spasms
  • Gastritis, acid indigestion
The following is a general guideline of foods that increase acidity and foods that increase alkilinity:

FOODS THAT INCREASE ACIDITY:
High protein (animal), fat (trans fat, excessive saturated fats), sugar, processed and refined foods, chemicals, preservatives, hormones, antibiotics (in food), excessive dairy consumption, and many grains (wheat/gluten).
Stress, alcohol, caffeine and cigarettes compound the problem.
FOODS THAT INCREASE ALKALINITY:
Fruits, vegetables, seaweeds, and some fermented foods and teas.

Idealy your diet should be composed of 75% alkaline foods and 25% acidic foods to maintain a healthy PH in the body.  Not many of us actually achieve this do to poor diet and lifestyle choices, stress, exposure to harmful toxins in our food and our environment, however there are simple ways you can start to increase these foods into your diet.  Once you start including healthier foods into your daily diet, you will feel the difference in your energy level, outlook and your chronic conditions may improve or heal altogether.
