New cell phone models are being released all the time. The latest gadget, the iPhone and others use newer technology and offer more features, which seem to make them almost a necessity. As mobile devices become more integrated into our daily lives, many have begun to question the safety of such devices, for several reasons.

Driving while talking/texting with mobile devices

An increasing number of mobile device related driving accidents are reported each year. Many due to users texting while driving, or become distracted while talking on their cell phones. One study done by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute reported that 80% of all crashes are due to driver distraction within seconds of the accident. Another study of cell phone use and driving found that drivers don't necessarily need to be dialing or even talking on the cell phone to be distracted enough to cause an accident, but that "listening intently" was sufficient. Be aware of the cell phone and driving laws in your state. The Governor's Highway Safety Association has a list of all the states and their current cell phone laws. Many states are now instituting laws which prohibit cell phone use while driving or require drivers to use a hands-free accessory.

Electromagnetic Fields (EMF)

Electromagnetic fields (or EMF's) are energy fields that surround many electronic devices, including: mobile phones, computers, even compact fluorescent light bulbs. The health hazards of EMF's have been known for years, and the Department of Labor and Industry has outlined several regulations regarding exposure to EMF's since 1978. There are literally dozens of cases of individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer after years of living near or under power lines, which have more powerful EMF's. But, some now claim that even long-term exposure to moderate EMF's (as with cell phones) can cause cancer. There is more evidence needed to back up this claim, and the several studies that have been done on cell phone use and cancer around the world have produced mixed results.

Devices overheating

The most recent scare has been a problem with certain devices overheating - some even catching fire or exploding. In 2008 Apple had a recall on their iPod after three units in Japan caught fire. In 2006, Apple found a problem with the Sony batteries in the iBook which were causing the batteries to overheat, and even explode. In most cases, problems with cell phones and other mobile devices overheating are due to faulty battery cells. (see more on this issue at wired.com).

But don't throw out your mobile devices just yet! They are a great asset to modern society. They keep us connected and provide an efficient means of communication. They can also be invaluable in emergencies. The key is to use your mobile device wisely! Use the ear piece accessory with cell phones to lower the EMF exposure around your head, and also to keep your hands free when driving. Don't text while driving, irregardless of your state's laws, but wait until you have come to a complete stop and no longer need to focus on the road. Lastly, pay attention to device recalls. If your mobile device has been recalled for any reason, send it back! Your safety is worth any temporary inconvenience you may have until it is replaced.
