Zicam nasal spray and swabsare being pulled from the shelves this week due to a side effect which causes loss of smell. Reports covering the FDA's complaint against Zicam are numerous. A few are listed below.
Many reports and comments are referring to Zicam as homeopathic. While Zicam does offer homeopathic products, it is important to note that not all Zicam products are homeopathic. Several of the nasal sprays, such as the Extreme Congestion Relief, contain Oxymetazoline HCL, a nasal decongenstent which is also found in many other brands of nasal spray. Additionally, the ingredient causing the loss of smell is zinc gluconate, which is not homeopathic. Some Zicam products are strictly homeopathic, such as Zicam's Allergy Relief.
The FDA is warning consumers to discontinue using Zicam immediately. However, consumers need to be aware that other claims have been made regarding the negative side effects of Oxymetazoline HCL as well as Xylometazoline, causing a condition known as Rhinitis Medicamentosa.
