The date's been set: Doctor Who: The Waters Of Mars airs Sunday, November 15 at 7pm on BBC One and airs on BBC AMERICA, Saturday December 19, 9:00pm ET/PT. Which is, like, two weeks and a few days from now and then a month from that, and the news is starting to flood the interwebs with information that will hopefully not spoiler anything. A selection:
DigitalSpy has seen the special and offers us ten teasers for how it goes, including a few snippets of how the Doctor is going to start acting weird almost immediately. And at the end, something he says will shock us. "Shock" is a strong word; if someone who reviews shows for a living is shocked, how terrible must this sentence be? We aren't even going to try to predict, but the fact of it's existence sets off all sorts of manic little thought-streams.
The Guardian's coverage and a bit of interviewing is here. We're just charmed that Tennant's ready to be a viewer again, and that he'll continue to be a fan even after knowing how it's made. And on being the Doctor: "You know James Bond is always James Bond and Tarzan is always Tarzan and Sherlock Holmes is always Sherlock Holmes, but the Doctor is up to you – it's a blank sheet and you can scribble all over it. It's up to you."
David Tennant News expands a little on how sad the last scenes of the specials were to play. We're expecting to be devastated; as the show's been going on, each end along the way has been sadder, and his had better be amazing. Everything changes after this. And here, David and Russell talk a little about how knowing that everything changes informs these upcoming specials.
Here's a new extended clip from the press release:
And on to the future:
Steven Moffat calls Matt Smith "the best" and promises that he's everything we'd expect from the lovely Time Lord, "including ancient"-- which calls to mind a nice juxtaposition between his extreme youthfulness in looks and his extreme age in reality, which would be something fun to play with. Additionally, the article says that the Moff is writing six of the episodes and overseeing the other seven, and we have to admit, an entire series built by Steven Moffat holds more than a little excitement. If it's as good as Blink or Girl in the Fireplace or Silence in the Library through the whole series... We predict much swooning and tense moments and incredibly clever dialog. Also, the Tardis is getting a plot-based (as opposed to out-of-the-blue) makeover, too.
