Handed a 6-1 cushion after three innings Cliff Lee doesn't appear to be in the mood to blow it. He breezes through a 1-2-3 fourth, but runs into trouble when Eric Hinske--Yes, the same Eric Hinske that Brad Lidge struck out to end the 2008 World Series--draws a one-out walk in the fifth.
Derek Jeter singles him to third, before Johnny Damon hits a weak grounder that Ryan Howard fields fair just inside the first base line. Howard steps on the bag for the second out, then looks to second and sees he has no play on Jeter Had he looked home, however, Howard might've been able to gun down Hinske who crosses the plate with the Yanks' second run of the game. No big deal, as Lee gets Mark Teixeira to fly to right, keeping it 6-2.
Jayson Werth makes a bid to get that run right back off righthander Alfredo Aceves, but Brett Gardner runs down his drive just short of the 387-foot sign in leftcenter. Still 6-2 after five.
Lee goes right back to work and takes care of the Yanks in the top of the sixth. Through six innings he's allowed four hits, while walking an uncharacteristic three batters, throwing 91 pitches. It's uncertain how much longer Charlie Manuel will let him go, especially if he'd like to be able to bring back his ace with two days rest should it cone down to a decisive Game 7 Thursday.
But there's nobody throwing for the Phils as Lee warms up for the seventh. He looks as strong as ever, setting down the side on just 11 pitches. Two innings from victory the only question seems to be will Charlie let him finish the game?.
