-Larry Vaught has an interesting article regarding UK football’s season and their upcoming game against Eastern Kentucky. After two straight victories, with one of them coming against an above-average football team in Auburn, UK let one slip against Mississippi State last weekend on Halloween. The game had a lot of implications on Kentucky’s season. Instead of being (4-4) with four games left, UK would have been at (5-3), a winnable game against Eastern and three other SEC matchups in the future.
The article highlights UK’s defensive end DeQuin Evans’ feelings on the loss and the apparent idea that UK’s players may have let up during the game. Evans is reported as saying,
We can’t let them get these breakaway huge runs and stuff like that. We have to keep playing assignment football and not think we have them beat because we are already winning.
The whole game was a mess in itself with Mississippi State running back Tony Dixon racking up 252 yards and two touchdown against a Kentucky defense that had been stellar in their previous two games. The let up was a let-down as Kentucky wound up losing by a touchdown. A good read nonetheless as Kentucky moves forward with its season and tries to regain focus against their in-state counterpart on Saturday.
-College basketball analyst Gary Parrish of CBSSportsline.com has his picks in for the SEC and Kentucky leads the way. He believes Kentucky’s talent alone is enough to get them far into March and quite possibly an appearance at this year’s Final Four. He also highlights the importance of freshman point guard John Wall and his ability to be more than just a player this season, but also a leader on and off the court. It should be an extremely exciting year for college basketball and Kentucky looks like it will be in the mix of things until the very end.
-Tobias Harris is still a hot topic in the college basketball recruiting scene, as he has said he will choose a college to play basketball at by the end of November. He’s taken several official visits, with Louisville being his most recent stop on his trail of visits. Louisville was the fourth destination, with Harris having already visited Syracuse, Tennessee, Kentucky, and now Louisville. He has Virginia, Maryland, and Georgia Tech left on his list and will look to make a decision around November 19th. At this point in the recruitment, UK stands with as good a chance as any of the other schools to land Harris with his father saying, “Right now all of them are equal.” We’ll just have to wait until the 19th of November which isn’t too far away, but if Calipari can’t reel in Harris, there may be some anxious UK fans out there.
-UK head coach John Calipari has stated that he would much rather use the time given to exhibition games to play scrimmages against some of the nation’s elite teams. Something of this nature was done while Calipari was at Memphis, when they would scrimmage teams like St. Louis before the season began. Calipari feels that these scrimmages prepare a top-tier team better than playing games against NAIA schools like Campbellsville for some pre-season action. This idea of doing away with exhibition games may be quite a struggle for Calipari because of the fact that the games still bring in a tremendous amount of revenue for Kentucky. All of these games are schedule well in advance and would create conflicts with season ticket holders who have already paid for those games. It is an interesting dilemma because let’s face it, the exhibition games aren’t taken as seriously as regular season games. If Calipari feels like his team would be better prepared for the regular season by scrimmaging then I’m all for it. The coach knows best, but because of logistical problems this might be a stickler for Cal.
