Van Jones, the man appointed by President Obama to be the special adviser for green jobs at the White House Council on Environmental Quality, has resigned amid questions about his political views.
CNN confirms that the White House accepted Jones’ resignation late Saturday night. Jones is a noted environmentalist who had aimed to create green jobs to help both the economy and the environment. The Yale Law alum was named one of Time’s “environmental heroes” in 2008.
Jones has been under heavy attack from conservatives, particularly TV host Glenn Beck, for signing what is called the “911 Truth Statement,” a petition urging Americans to look into whether the Bush administration allowed the World Trade Center attacks to occur. Jones says he signed the document years ago and the statement does not express views he has had in the past or views that he currently harbors.
Jones co-founded the group Color of Change, which successfully convinced five dozen sponsors to pull their ads from running during Beck’s show on Fox News. Advertisers that agreed to pull ads include Wal-Mart, AT&T, Verizon, Best Buy, and Lowe’s. Color of Change organized the petition after Beck claimed Obama was “racist” against white people in July.
