Today is the first round of protests at the U.N. Headquarters in New York City, where Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will speak in front of the United Nations General Assembly. Thousands of protesters will in return be uniting to speak out about the supposed fraudulent Iranian election in June and the violence that has taken place in the country since the election.
The New York Times has an article up today about one person who will not be attending: New Yorker Kian Tajbakhsh. He was arrested in early July in Iran for “stirring up revolutionary sentiment and of being an instigator paid by sinister Western forces.” Tajbakhsh and his family had been planning to move back to New York this fall so he could teach at Columbia University, but he is still being detained.
The protesters aren’t the only ones against Ahmadinejad. British officials are threatening to walk out if the Iranian President once again claims that the Holocaust did not occur.
The Lede says thousands of exiled Iranians are traveling to New York to take part in the protests. According to the Green Brief, the demonstrations will begin at 12:30pm and the protests will continue tomorrow, starting at 10:00am with a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.
