The race for the open 2010 gubernatorial seat may not be as clear-cut as previously thought. Jim Galloway of the AJC reports that Thurbert Baker, who is running in the Democratic primary, raised $704,331 during the last fundraising period. He also has over half a million dollars in cash on hand.
Baker, Georgia’s current Attorney General, has been in politics in the state for years. Recently, however, he has been talked about in political circles as likely to come in second in the Democratic primary behind former Gov. Roy Barnes. Barnes did not file how much he has raised because, simply, his campaign isn’t even up and running yet. But these figures show strong support for Baker and could certainly make what most assumed would be a boring Democratic primary into a battle.
On the Republican side, U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal and state Sen. Eric Johnson both have raised close to $1,000,000. These figures are astonishing compared to the less than half a million that the two “front runners,” John Oxendine and Karen Handel, have amassed. Although a Strategic Vision, LLC poll taken last month showed that Oxendine was polling highest among Republican candidates, he now has a great deal of ground to make up.
