A source close to Sarah Palin has just announced that she will not seek another term as governor of Alaska. This probably means only one of two things - either she is considering a run for the Senate, or she’s preparing herself for the 2012 presidential election.
Either option sounds absurd. Palin hasn’t gained any credibility since last year’s election, where she was lauded for having little political experience. She still doesn’t have the experience. Another term as governor would have only been a positive for Palin.
Analysts are saying so far that it’s likely Gov. Palin had doubts as to whether she could win another term as governor. Before the 2008 election, her popularity rating was over 80%, one of the highest approval ratings for a governor in the entire country. Now she barely has 50% of Alaskans' support. It is reasonable to believe she would have won re-election, but certainly not in the same commanding fashion that she did in 2006.
Only time will tell what Gov. Palin's move will be next, although it is safe to assume Palin will try to once again stand on the national stage.
UPDATE: MSNBC confirms Gov. Palin will be stepping down within weeks. So, is this a case of Palin seeking a national platform, or is there something else going on?
From KTUU, Anchorage's NBC affilliate:
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Gov. Sarah Palin will resign her office in a few weeks, she said during a news conference at her Wasilla home Friday morning.
Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will be inaugurated at the Governor's Picnic at Pionner Park in Fairbanks on Saturday, July 25, Palin said.
