Two weeks ago, I wrote about the South Carolina Supreme Court’s decision to rule on the side of two students who were suing the Governor for not accepting federal stimulus funds. Since then, things have gotten weird. The major news networks and outlets such as the AP are reporting Sanford is nowhere to be found. The State newspaper said earlier, “The whereabouts of Gov. Mark Sanford have been unknown to state officials since Thursday,” and his wife and members of his staff commented that they had not heard from his since then as well.
Well, rest easy - despite his last known location being Atlanta, his office now says Sanford was away hiking the Appalachian Trail this weekend. Many in South Carolina are not pleased.
State Sen. Jake Knotts issued a statement today saying: "While I believe every person deserves a vacation, our constitution gives only one man authority to act in case of an emergency - the governor of South Carolina. Should the governor decide to vacation away from South Carolina again, it is my sincere hope that he will take his security detail and keep his cell phone on so that he can be reached in case of a large-scale emergency." Ouch.
The embarrassment caused by Sanford going missing, which was picked up nationally, is probably another stake in the heart of Sanford’s possible 2012 presidential campaign. Add on the outrage caused when Sanford refused to accept stimulus money, money that was needed to save hundreds of jobs in education, and the campaign is seeming less and less likely with every new day.
