According to a new Strategic Vision, LLC poll, gubernatorial candidates John Oxendine, a Republican, and Democrat Roy Barnes have the most support in their respective parties. Roy Barnes has little competition in the Democratic primary, and Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine appears to be easily beating Secretary of State Karen Handel. At least as of now, before the attacks start flying.
Among Republican candidates, those polled said if voting were to take place on the present day, they would vote for:
| John Oxendine | 35% |
| Karen Handel | 13% |
| Nathan Deal | 12% |
| Eric Johnson | 4% |
| Ray McBerry | 2% |
| Austin Scott | 2% |
| Undecided | 32% |
On the Democratic side, the results reported:
| Roy Barnes | 49% |
| Thurbert Baker | 30% |
| David Poythress | 5% |
| Dubose Porter | 2% |
| Undecided | 14% |
The poll shows what many in Georgia have already noted: the Republican primary is likely to be a fiercer battle than the Democratic primary, where former governor Roy Barnes is expected to secure an easy victory. It is also interesting to note that only 14% of Democrats were currently undecided on who they would vote for, while 32% of Republicans reported they were undecided.
Other responses to questions asked showed 49% of Georgians polled approved of Obama’s overall job performance. 56% approved of Sen. Johnny Isakson’s performance, which is significant as he is up for reelection next year. A Daily Kos poll in April hinted that Isakson could be in danger of retaining his seat, but so far no formidable Democratic challenger has entered the race.
