Republican candidate for governor John Oxendine has posted a new ad on his site that’s receiving a great deal of attention, but probably not the kind the current Insurance Commissioner wanted. The animated ad features “King Roy the rat,” which represents Democratic candidate Roy Barnes, battling the ox of John Oxendine. It really speaks for itself, so take a look:
The AJC’s Jim Galloway said of the ad: “If you can find something redeeming in this video, please fill me in. I’m bewildered.” Comments on the article showed a similar response, with some saying “Oxendine really is dumb as an ox” and that the video "has to be one of the worst campaign video’s in history.”
It’s surprising, most of all, that Oxendine has already decided to spend campaign money attacking a Democratic opponent before making it out of the Republican primary. In June, a Strategic Vision, LLC poll had Oxendine leading all Republican candidates with 35% of the vote, but a whopping 32% were undecided.
Oxendine, however, is facing a bigger issue - he’s in the middle of an ethics investigation, accused of accepting $120,000 in illegal contributions for his gubernatorial election campaign. Oxendine had asked the state Ethics Commission to drop the case, but the commission refused. Not to mention he is receiving heat from the gay community after the Southern Voice attacked his stance on gay marriage. Oxendine responded in an e-mail to supporters: “Those who are engaged in homosexual behavior are people—who need love and forgiveness, and who need to understand the love of God.”
