After a long summer hiatus, 'Grey's Anatomy' finally returned to the airwaves Thursday night with its first two episodes of the show's season, the grief-themed 'Good Mourning' and 'Goodbye'.
No fans who've been keeping up with 'Grey's' news during the off-season were surprised to see George O'Malley die in the opening minutes of the first episode, but the reactions of his friends and colleagues at Seattle Grace did include a few surprises. Callie cried. Bailey made a vow to stop caring so much for her patients and underlings. The Chief grew even more desperate to save the hospital's ranking- not to mention his job. Alex bottled up his feelings. Izzie vowed to kick the ass of a complete stranger. Cristina hid her pain by becoming even more caustic. And Meredith and Derek distracted themselves with sex in random areas of their house.
Okay, so maybe their reactions weren't that surprising after all. But here are the key plot points of the season premiere that gave us a glimpse of what to expect from the rest of the season:
1. No one's buying the Post-It wedding: Meredith and Derek spent much of the episode trying to pass themselves off as newlyweds, but received a lot of ridicule in return. Will they fold under the pressure from their friends and finally make things official?
2. Izzie's cancer hasn't been cured: Izzie was discharged from the hospital in the first hour of the show, but it was made clear by her new doctor that there is still cancer in her body, and she will be living with this disease for the time being. After spending so many months convinced she was going to die, Izzie- and her terrified husband Alex- must now get used to the idea that she's going to live.
3. Owen and Cristina are in it for the long haul: Although Cristina spent the entire two hours of the season premiere avoiding her feelings about George's death and laughing at the cruel nickname she gave a patient injured in a boating accident, the one thing she is taking seriously is her relationship with Owen. Cristina attended therapy sessions with her new boyfriend and even followed through on an open discussion over the night terrors that had caused him to choke her in her sleep last season.
4. Promotions: Callie and Bailey are now attending surgeons (although Callie's now working at Mercy West- for the time being) and Lexie is now a resident.
5. The big news: Like last season, this year's premiere ended with a major announcement from the Chief. Seattle Grace will be merging with rival hospital Mercy West, and there will be lay-offs.
So now that the wait is finally over, did the season premiere live up to last year's staggering finale? What was your favorite scene? (Mine is a tie between the Izzie-led laughter fit at George's funeral, and Derek stopping the elevator to allow Bailey a chance to open up to him. Both were nice throwbacks to classic season two episodes). Get the discussion going in the comments section, and be sure to come back next week for a recap of the next new episode.
