EW.com was the first to report today that 'Grey's Anatomy's most polarizing star, Katherine Heigl is set to take a 5-episode hiatus from the show beginning in September to accomodate the filming of her new movie 'Life as We Know It'. As if the thought of losing Izzie wasn't shocking enough (especially considering her absence will likely overlap with Ellen Pompeo's maternity leave), E! Online has gotten their hands on the reasoning behind Izzie's departure from Seattle Grace.
SPOILER ALERT: This is your last chance to stop reading before major spoilers for the new season of 'Grey's Anatomy' are revealed.
According to E! Online, Izzie won't be leaving her job voluntarily. She will be either fired or downsized as a result of Seattle Grace's merger with rival hospital Mercy West (the same Mercy West that George almost transferred to at the end of season three). The merger also explains the arrival of the three new docs that were cast last week, provides a convenient excuse for Meredith's temporary absence and will be the driving force behind the stories of season six.
Doubling the staff of Seattle Grace will allow more wiggle room in case more of the show's original cast decide to follow in the footsteps of T.R. Knight and move on. But seeing as how Shonda Rhimes and the ABC execs have yet to see to how the audience will react to Knight's absence, is it really wise to start preparing for a new generation of 'Grey's Anatomy'?
