For this week's RER, we're looking back on the karma-themed season two episode, "What Have I Done To DeserveThis?"
Plot Summary: Alex, Izzie, and Cristina immediately know something's up when they notice Meredith and George avoiding each other at work, but neither will spill. Alex is the first to figure it out, because, as he says to Meredith, "Bambi looks pissed and you look guilty." Later, George overhears Alex and Meredith discussing what happened, and becomes angry, thinking Meredith told everyone that they'd had sex. Cristina and Izzie arrive just in time to hear Geroge's outburst, and when he realizes Meredith actually had kept the secret, he loses his focus and slips down a flight of stairs.
While Alex, Izzie, and Cristina all let Meredith know how wrong it was to casually hook up with George, who Meredith must have realized had a major crush on her, George heads into an exam room to have his dislocated shoulder popped back into place. His orthopedic specialist is Dr. Callie Torres, and she remembers him as "the heart-in-the-elevator guy". Callie clearly finds George attractive, but he's still too busy moping over Meredith to notice. At the end of the workday, he returns to Meredith's house, packs up a suitcase and tells her he's moving out. She explains that she'd been emotional the night before when he'd come to her and professed his love. She hadn't realized that she didn't feel the same way and that sleeping with him would be a mistake until it was too late. She asks him if they can't just go back to the way things were before, but George says he can't do that and leaves. Later, George is sitting outside the hospital with his suitcase when Callie approaches him and writes her phone number down on his hand. She leaves him left looking stunned. Preston Burke sees George sitting by himself with the suitcase, and invites him (much to Cristina's chagrin) back to their apartment. Meanwhile, Meredith takes comfort in taking up her ex-boyfriend Derek's offer of friendship.
Derek's wife, Addison, believes she's facing some karma of her own when peeing in the great outdoors gives her a nasty case of poision oak in "the place no one ever wants to have poision oak". She whines to Bailey that this is her karmic retribution for her affair with Mark Sloan who recently visited the hospital and reminded Derek of her infidelity. But when she eventually reveals her condition to Derek, they share a laugh over it.
The happiest couple in this episode appear to be Alex and Izzie, who have just resumed sleeping together following his indiscretion with Nurse Olivia. But some harsh words from Meredith, and Izzie's continued flirtation with heart patient Denny Duquette make Alex realize Izzie is only using him for sex these days, and he's ruined his chances to ever have her truly care for him again.
Most Applause-Worthy Moment: Despite George's whining and moping throughout most of this episode, it still feels good to see him finally get some positive female attention when Callie puts the moves on him.
Comedic Highlight: New mother Bailey resorts to drastic measures to hide Addison's embarrassing poison oak from Chief Webber, including showing him the milk stains on her blouse to get him to leave the room.
Biggest Revelation: Meredith's awkward, tearful tryst with George is a moment of raw, painful emotion, and gives us more insight into the depths of the pain she's been feeling since her break-up with Derek.
Biggest Tearjerker Moment: A heart patient wakes up after a risky surgery to discover his fiancee has left him because she couldn't cope with his illness.
Most Surprisingly Sweet Moment: After learning what happened with Meredith, George's ex-girlfriend Olivia comforts him by saying if Meredith can't love him, she doesn't deserve him. George then finally apologizes to Olivia for humiliating her when she gave him syphillis.
Most Quintessentially 'Grey's Anatomy' Moment: After realizing that Meredith had slept with George, Alex tells her he's not surprised because "when you're life is sucking, you get drunk and sleep with inappropriate men. It's your thing. Whatever. I find it charming."
Surprise Guest Stars: 'Heroes' wonder boy Noah Gray-Cabey is adorable as a pint-sized patient who's taking his head injury much better than his panicked dad. Jeffrey Dean Morgan also makes his second appearance on the show as the doomed Denny Duquette.
Grade: B Much of this episode aims for laughs rather than pathos, making it seem a little shallower than your average 'Grey's'. But the glimpse of George and Meredith's night-to-remember is 'Grey's' at its emotionally devastating best.
