Emmy ballots will be making their way to voters this week. After Ew.com's Michael Ausiello singled out Katherine Heigl as one of his dream ballot nominees, you guys weighed in with your own thoughts on which 'Grey's' actors deserved to be rewarded for their fine work in 'Grey's Anatomy's' resurgent fifth season. Now that the poll results are in, it's time to start making pleas on behalf of the most deserving contenders. For your consideration...
Ellen Pompeo for Best Actress in a Drama: This was the season Meredith Grey finally grew up and got happy. But just because she didn't have as much dark and twisty material to work with doesn't mean Pompeo put any less effort into her performance.
Sandra Oh for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama: Cristina started off the season by having an icicle yanked out of her gut. And her tortured romance with Owen Hunt managed to melt the hearts of fans all season-long, without ever getting sappy.
Katherine Heigl for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama: Love her or hate her, there's no denying that Heigl's performance through Izzie's cancer storyline brought back both the trademark sweeping romance and gut-wrenching heartbreak that had been missing from 'Grey's' for a while.
Chandra Wilson for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama: Always one of the strongest members of the 'Grey's' ensemble, Bailey shone this season by showing us her maternal side, both in her care of Izzie and of her new pediatric patients.
Patrick Dempsey for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama: Personally, it was a tough year for McDreamy. He lost patients, botched ihs first few attempts to propose to Meredith, and was eventually tasked with the tough job of saving the life of his girlfriend's roommate. But all the trouble paid off, as it gave Dempsey his meatiest dramatic material in all his five seasons on the show.
Justin Chambers for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama: It's always been easy to write Alex Karev off as a jerk. But this season Chambers showed us Karev could be a stand-up guy as he stood by Izzie through hallucinations, cancer, and even a surprise wedding. And he gets extra credit for doing it without losing his edge or wit.
Kevin McKidd for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama: As an Iraq war vet suffering from PTSD, McKidd pulled off the unique task of bringing new intensity to a long-running show while making it hard to believe he'd ever not been a part of it.
Jennifer Westfeldt for Best Guest Actress in a Drama: Every episodes brings a slew of quirky new patients for the Seattle Grace docs to treat. But there was something so special about Westfeldt's performance as a pregnant woman a brain tumor, it sent Derek spiraling out of control when he couldn't save her. That's how you make your mark in a limited role.
Eric Stoltz for Best Guest Actor in a Drama: In a season where Meredith and Derek thankfully didn't break up for once, the biggest test of their relationship was their conflicting feelings towards a controversial patient- a death-row prisoner played by Stoltz. His character wan't around for long, but his presence still provided a mental and emotional challenge to both the main cast and the audience.
'Grey's Anatomy' for Best Drama Series: Seattle Grace started out the season in a slump. Their hospital ranking had dropped, and it was no secret this storyline was Shonda Rhimes' way of expressing her frustration with the quality of her show in its last few seasons. But thanks to new romances, new maturity from the characters, and a new medical crisis that brought the cast back together, 'Grey's Anatomy' once again became the great medical/romantic drama it was in its first two unforgettable seasons. And that's certainly an award-worthy accomplishment.
'Grey's Anatomy's own Chandra Wilson will announce the Emmy nominations with Jim Parsons of 'The Big Bang Theory' live on the morning of July 16.
