'Grey's Anatomy' kept up the momentum it built up last week with a strong third episode to its sixth season. In 'I Always Feel Like Somebody's Watchin' Me', the entire Seattle Grace staff went into overdrive as they fought to keep their jobs in the wake of the hospital's pending merger with Mercy West. Here's how our favorite docs dealt with the stress:
1. Meredith stayed calm during the crisis, a skill she claimed to have picked up during her unstable childhood. But her facade cracked just a bit when the moment of truth arrived, and she admitted she wouldn't be calm if any of her friends had lost their jobs. It was a nice moment that showed that the remaining members of the original intern class are still as close as they ever were.
2. Cristina worried that her lack of a mentor would endanger her job, and shrewdly latched herself onto the service of the clueless Arizona, resulting in some great comedy as the prickly Dr. Yang tried to prove she was good with kids. But once Callie tipped Arizona off, Cristina found herself off peds and more desperate to prove herself than ever.
3. Realizing her status may be more fragile than her co-workers due to her long absence from the OR, Izzie made a premature return to work- complete with a cheap wig. Alex made his displeasure known, embarrassing his wife in front of her interns and even Derek when he barged into a surgery to make sure she took her meds. Izzie made it through the surgery, but couldn't hide the physical toll the work had taken on her. At home that night, she confessed to Alex the real reason she'd insisted on working through the pain- being back at work took her mind off the fact that she still had cancer, and that her best friend George was dead.
4. No one let the stress get to them as bad as Lexie did, and it showed in her work- until she saved the day by coming up with a way to convince a seriously ill mother of a mentally ill son to get a much-needed surgery. But no sooner had Lexie gotten her confidence back than she learned that most of her fellow second-year residents had been laid off.
5. Derek served as the voice of the people in this episode as he begged the Chief to talk to the staff about the changes being made. The Chief refused, cruelly delegating the news of the firings to the hosptial's e-mail system, and leaving Derek to comfort those who'd lost their jobs.
6. Callie, who left Seattle Grace for Mercy West last week days before the merger announcement, seemed resigned to the fact that the Chief wouldn't be inclined to keep her around, seeing as how she'd already walked out on him. She contemplated applying for a position in Portland, Oregon- but that idea was squashed by Arizona, who didn't want to be in a long-distance relationship.
7. Owen and Mark were left to support their freaked-out friends in this episode. When their words of encouragment didn't do the trick, they resorted to beer and baseball. The ladies were having none of it and demanded to be driven back to the hospital, but Owen finally found a way to make his point, with the help of a pitching machine. He barked at Cristina to forget about what could happen in the future, and instead focus on hitting the ball that was coming right at her. Cristina hit that ball, and the others got the message loud and clear.
