"The Office" is facing some backlash from suicide prevention groups over a scene featured in the October 29 episode. For those who didn't see it, the moment in question is when Steve Carell's character Michael Scott attempts to scare some children on a "hayride" by dropping down from the ceiling in costume with a rope around his neck. He then tells the children that "Kids, just remember, suicide is not the answer. It is the easy way out."
Now it appeared to be fairly obvious that the joke was meant in good humor, but that doesn't change the fact that it could minimize the effect of suicide in the minds of impressionable viewers. The executive director of the American Suicide Prevention Foundation recently told the Associated Press that "we try not to be zealots about this, but this one...kind of crossed the line."
Neither NBC nor the creators of "The Office" have issued a response to this point concerning the incident. Do you think the scene was inappropriate, or was it all in good fun? Let me know your thoughts with a comment below and as always stay tuned for more TV news.
