"Survivor" has a nasty habit of keeping us from knowing a contestant. Why they do this, I have no particular idea; maybe they're not exciting enough, or maybe they just don't have enough bearing on the game to succeed.
In the case of "Survivor: Samoa," that guy is Brett Clouser. Until this episode, we really weren't seeing much of Brett on the show. He was there, but he was like a shadow that wandered around from time to time with his fancy t-shirt. After Thursday night's recap episode, we know the truth: Brett's a pretty smart guy. He didn't want to vote Erik out of the game after the merge, and he wants to take his time before coming to big decisions. That is how you play "Survivor!"
Of course, outside of the midway point of the episode we really didn't get that much of Brett...but I guess we have to start somewhere
All about Russell...
On the other side of the coin, much of this episode was about again witnessing the "greatness" of Russell. He's cocky, he's conniving, and he let the chickens loose just for the fun of it. We saw a veritable highlight of Russell during this recap, but we also saw some signs that the Texas oil company owner could be in trouble down the road.
Why? He seems to be doing things in the game strictly for the sake of doing things. For example, in the preview for next week it showed him devising a plan with John to get rid of Mick. Why wouldn't you just stick with the people you have? Really Russell seemed to have a smart plan figured out in the recap: keep Natalie and Shambo as your final three and then take out Mick and Jaison at the final five. Don't let Galu stick around, since those are the people who could burn you in the long run.
...and also Shambo
Shambo has been the other force this season in terms of air time, and we learned a good bit more about her in this episode. For example, we found out that comes from an enormous family and that she lost her older sister to cancer when she was 23. All in all Shambo is getting a very likable edit, which could suggest a certain fate for her down the road. (Winner? I don't know about that, but it is possible.)
We also learned that Shambo is playing the game more than we realized. She didn't want to be the pawn of Erik, John, and the little "Galu boy's club." She wanted to pave her own path, which could explain why she has decided to flip to Foa Foa.
The wild cards
Jaison was put in a very favorable light this week, as we learned that his family hasn't always lived an easy life. He never wants to make excuses for himself in fear of "disappointing" his family. On the other hand, the editors have done a very good job of showing Jaison struggling and complaining. Which Jaison are we really seeing? I don't think we'll ever see the guy quit, but it's tough to tell if he will make it to the end.
Mick, meanwhile, was made out to be the worst leader of all time. At Foa Foa he was reluctant to make any big decisions, instead choosing to let somebody else make the call. Mick seems to be preoccupied with staying out of the way. He did do one brilliant move: realizing that he could use Russell's financial success to his advantage.
So what's next?
"Survivor" is getting into its stretch run, so we will really start to know who out of these players will rank among Todd from "China" and Danni from "Guatemala" as great players and who should've been voted out a long time ago.
Galu is certainly still in trouble, but John, Monica, and Brett seem to be smart enough to stick around. Dave, meanwhile, may be the target of a "psychic vision" by Shambo.
