Monday night's episode of "Cake Boss" did a rare thing for me: it made me want pizza almost as much as cake. TLC's former follow-up to "Jon and Kate Plus 8" (it will take over the 8:00 p.m. Central timeslot next week) tends to bring about sugar cravings on a weekly basis--but this time, we added a little bit of pepperoni and sauce into the mix.
"Cake Boss" focused (as they usually do) on a few different challenges, including making a dog cake, the aforementioned pizza challenge, a treat for some golfers, and trying to balance out a 7-foot cake featuring all the planets of the solar system (I miss Pluto already). The highlight of the back-to-back episodes, though, was easily seeing the boss himself, Buddy Valastro, interact with some of the dogs at the shelter. Dogs just have that innocent quality, and no one probably enjoyed their cake more than them.
The pizza challenge was mainly interesting in that it featured Buddy facing off against his father-in-law, who has made pizza for 25 years. Needless to say, Buddy lost this one (it's one of the few challenges on this show where he hasn't completely succeeded).
"Cake Boss" is in a way the opposite of "Jon and Kate." Both shows are about family, but they handle the conflict in a very different way. "Cake Boss" feels so genuine, that these are people who love each other so much that they aren't afraid to throw flour off the roof at each other. That probably would have led to a meltdown on TLC's other, more famous show. Plus, at the end of every episode you get the opportunity to see some people act like it's Christmas morning when they get their cakes.
Do you think "Cake Boss" will flourish in its new timeslot? Let me know your thoughts with a comment below!
