Robert J. Halderman will be on court on Tuesday as he attempts to have an extortion case against him thrown out due to insufficient evidence. However, this case isn't exactly like every other one Manhattan gets on a regular basis: it involves late-night comedian David Letterman.
It was just two months ago that this entire scandal began. Letterman received an envelope on September 9 claiming that unless he paid $2 million he would be the victim of a man disclosing to the world a dark secret. The secret in question? Letterman had a series of affairs with former staffers while he was in a relationship with his then-girlfriend Regina Lasko (the two are now married). Letterman balked at the threat, going to the district attorney in Manhattan and ultimately having Halderman, a producer on "48 Hours," arrested for the crime. Meanwhile, Letterman decided to reveal his dark secret to the world on his show.
Halderman is now more or less claiming that the evidence against him--a diary by one of Letterman's former "lovers" (who at one point dated Halderman as well) and recorded conversations with Letterman's attorneys--aren't enough to definitively prove that he is guilty of the crime. (Apparently Halderman seems to think that instead he would take a phony $2 million check from an attorney simply because he wanted some cash.)
Do you think Halderman has a chance in this? Let me know your thoughts with a comment below and stay tuned for more news.
