As a new week begins, one can only ask, “What will Sarah Palin do to draw attention to herself this week?” The second question is, “How will she incite hatred among her supporters for her own political gain?” She will have to come up with something pretty incredible to top the David Letterman drama of the past few weeks.
What interests me is -- all of her cries about being victimized by the “liberal media” are her own doing. Thank God, the Letterman drama is nearly over. Obviously she needed to find some way to get herself back in the news as she had not been for a while. (and then came the latest round of jokes. Why hasn’t she gone after comedians before for their jokes, or after Madonna for making fun of her in her concert last summer? The reason is she was already in the news cycle at that time.
Hopefully this is a sign that God is having mercy on all of us and her “star” is fading. How hypocritical to make Letterman apologize for a joke, at the same time implying that he was a child rapist. This from a woman who wants rape victims to pay for their own rape kits? It doesn’t make sense, but then nothing she says ever does. Why haven’t her handlers told her that “also” and “too” are both adverbs meaning the same thing and aren't used together in the same sentence? Her constant refrain is "and also too ...."
Last fall David Brooks said Palin is a “cancer of the Republican Party.” I couldn’t agree with him more. When she talks to “the base”, she does not inspire them to bring out their most “Christian” side, but instead she fuels their paranoia and hatred for anyone who is of a different belief. Hearing her speech at the Republican National Convention last fall sent chills down my spine. It was not the speech of a leader, but of a divider who seeks to conquer and rule. Her philosophy is not based in Christian beliefs, but is based in demagogic insanity.
When she “debated” Joe Biden, she did not even acknowledge his authentic grief for the loss of his first wife and child. Instead she was ready to get back to her talking points. What is scary about her appeal is the essence of what she is saying to her base: “Stay uneducated. Don’t try to better yourself. Don’t open your mind to new ideas. Hate anyone who is not like you -- anyone who is not 'Christian'. Be prejudiced, because all those ‘liberal types’ are makin’ fun of you anyway.” Those are not the words of a Christian. They are divisive, not inclusive. A real Christian has empathy for all. A real Christian wants to inspire others to do better, rather than staying in the same old rut. Jesus didn't preach the gospel of hatred, prejudice and ignorance.
The “Joe Six Packs” of this country deserve respect. However, Palin doesn’t respect them. She thinks if she drops the “g’s” off the end of her words, they’ll fall for her hokey charm. They are honest, hardworking people who really do believe in God. What they lack in sophistication, they make up for with hearts of gold. I grew up with them. They deserve to be heard and their ideas considered (they have ample common sense), not pandered to by someone who thinks they’ll fall for what you are trying to say to them if “I’m talkin yer language.” It is an insult! A real Christian reaches out to everyone, not just “their personal base.”
Bill Maher had Megan McCain on “Real Time” recently and she was impressive. Not because of her political expertise, but because this young woman stated the need for the divide to be healed. She was a really good sport and very honest. Her candor was refreshing and Bill Maher was obviously taken by it too. If Sarah Palin could learn something from Ms. McCain, she’d be a formidable politician, not the butt of late night talk show jokes. That will never happen, as “Sarah Barracuda” has her own ideas.
It is ironic that after David Letterman, she may have cut off her one source of free publicity that has kept her in the news cycle — the comedians. If comedians aren’t making jokes about her, who will be talking about her inane rhetoric and her calculating but stupid machinations? In the long run that may be good for all of us, as hopefully she will finally fade into obscurity until she makes her next desperate grab for political power. She really is a “trojan moose” as Arianna Huffington described her during the election. It is best just to ignore her.
I pray this week the news will be “Palin free.”
