Terriers will be running as fast as their feet can fly during "Terrier Fun Day" Saturday at Swanson's Streamway Dog Park (6241 Woodland Dr., Shawnee).
Heartland Working Jack Russell Terrier Club (HWJRTC) is hosting the event, one of two to three "Fun Days" the club puts on a year. All terrier breeds, as well as Dachshunds, are welcome. Soft drinks and bottled water will be available. Dogs must be on a leash at all times.
Racing will start the day at 9 a.m., and the event will finish up sometime between noon and 1 p.m. Kristine Jaramillo, obedience trainer with Swanson's, will help with obedience and agility clinics.
"The folks at Swanson's were kind enough to let us use their dog park this weekend," said club treasurer Paul Kimmerly. "It's a great facility, especially with all the shade for the racetrack on what looks like will be a hot day. Plus, they're letting us use their agility equipment, which cuts down on how much club equipment we need to haul out there."

Parking at Swanson's is limited; an additional parking lot south of the facility is available for Saturday's "Fun Day." The cost is $5 per dog to participate in all events. Proceeds will go back into the club to defray event expenses and maintenance of equipment.
The club has been around since 1991. Besides the "Fun Days," the club hosts two major competitions. One is the Heart of America Working Terrier Trial, held in Lawrence, Kan., every April and sanctioned by the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America. The trial attracts terriers from all over the Midwest to compete in conformation, racing, go-to-ground (earth dog) and agility. This has had as many as 350 terriers participate in the past; the number has dropped to 200 – 250 terriers in the last couple of years.
HWJRTC also holds a smaller trial in October. Recently this non-sanctioned trial has been in Ottawa, Kan., with about 100 terriers taking part.
Club fundraisers include one at the spring trial to benefit the club itself and Jack Russell rescue, and another one in the fall for research into Jack Russell health issues.
