Gillian Held is a breath of fresh air. Normally, in the industry you run across the typical musician that is in it for the money, the fame, or the publicity. It’s hard in this type of work (entertainment journalism) to find someone just starting out with the real hope and inspiration that Held has.

Held is a 17 year-old high school student, who speaks to you like she has been living for years. She has been singing since she was ten years old. Gillian has performed in numerous school musicals and community theater. Held is a triple threat. "I've been singing for eight years now. I started dancing for 12 years, and I started acting in 6th grade," Held said.

When asked what her biggest passion is, Held answered with no hesitation, "Singing," she said. She is determined to become an accomplished singer. "I used to tell my dad, I really want to be a singer, I really want to be a singer," she said. After her confession, with the support of her family and those around her, Held began to pursue her singing career.

Held is slowly becoming a household name. Her song is appearing all over the place and has even played on the radio. Held is a great role model for young girls.

Everything hasn’t come easy for Held. She faced some comments from her fellow peers about her and her singing career. "I am not going sit here and be like, oh no everyone loves me in my school. I go through the people that talk about you, the rumors. I go through that every day. You have to be strong and you have to just not let it affect you. Take what they say about you, all the negativity and put it in your head. When your in the studio or working you think about that and it makes you want to work so much harder and show them," she said.

She wants to inspire people and let them know that no matter what people say and no matter how much negativity you may receive you shouldn’t give up.If you listen to her song you won’t believe how someone could say anything negative. She has a single currently available for download on Itunes called, “Something to Believe In.” Her voice rolls through the speakers like an accomplished singer and her song is catchy and easy to relate to. She is strong and she doesn't care what anyone says. The lyrics resonate in Held’s overall mission, to overcome the hate. "If you don't like me thats fine, but your words aren't going to bring me down," Held said. Here are some lyrics from her song:

Girl your not on MTV, but I don't hear a word that their saying. A songs playing way to loud and I'm not gonna fight it. I love to sing out loud.

Other listeners agree that Held is an accomplished singer. Just glancing at her My Space page will show comments like “I loveeee the song, I'm definitely going to buy it on Itunes!” from Christina and “Sounds Great! When Can I buy it?" from Deanna. Held is someone that young girls could relate to. Everyone has had those times where someone has made fun of them. Sometimes it could make you feel alone. Held knows not to let them get you down.
