Jorge is no stranger to the stage, nor is he unfamiliar to Bay Area audiences. He got his start with The Mark One Dinner Theatre in Lakeland, after auditioning for what he originally thought was just a community theatre production. This happy accident led him to become one of Tampa’s finest contributors to the stage. Primarily self-taught by simply throwing himself into his craft, he tries to embrace every opportunity to learn. He has said that, to him, “training is an ongoing thing; it should never stop.” Over the past 25 years, he has been fortuitous to work primarily as an actor/director, sharing his love of theatre with anyone who has had the good luck to work with him.

From those first days in the ensemble of South Pacific at The Mark One, to his recent foray as “Sancho” in Salerno’s Man of LaMancha, Jorge has never stopped learning and teaching every step of the way. He credits South Pacific’s cast and crew for his career path now: “I owe everything to them because they took the time to explain things to me (about) how to behave, what books to read…they (were) my first teachers. I will be grateful forever to them!” Other influences vary, he told me, depending on who is involved in his life at the moment. According to Acosta, influences come from anywhere at any time, and we should always make ourselves open and available to the potential for them to change us as they will.

Jorge’s current dream role would be to play “Salieri” in Amadeus. He sees the character as more than just your typical villain, but rather a devastated human being full of vulnerability, envy, and despair. He said he would love the challenge and the opportunity to portray him with a heart and not just a pathetic bad guy. After he has already played such great roles as “Che” and “Peron” in Evita and “Pozzo” in Waiting for Godot, that would be a treat, not just for Jorge as an actor, but for us as audience members!

He is currently planning two upcoming projects: directing and performing in Salerno/ACC’s Broadway in Concert and opening his own cabaret entitled “From Havana to Hell’s Kitchen” at American Stage this weekend. His cabaret show is, in his words, “a telling of (his) discovery of music and its importance in (his) life.” Audiences can expect to see a combination of different styles of music, including Cuban songs, show tunes, and pop music, interspersed with personal stories he’s sharing with the patrons…and it is “pay what you can”! This is sure to be a great night of entertainment, for a great price! Show times are as follows:

Friday November 6th at 8pm & 10pm
Saturday November 7th at 7pm & 9pm
Sunday November 8th at 7pm & 9pm

Jorge is, as anyone who knows him can attest to, a pleasure to work with. Affable and charming, he is never hesitant to offer sage advice. When you talk or work with him, he makes you feel special. He truly does appreciate every person in his life, and he embraces even the most negative situations as learning opportunities and chances for growth. He considers himself fortunate to be a part of the Bay Area theatre community. No, Jorge, it is we who are the lucky ones!
