The internet is saturated with blog after blog.  I think blogs are the reason I may have Adult ADD.  There are millions (90% of which are mom blogs), so how do you know which ones are worth reading?  As a PR professional working in a very small niche known as Media Relations for another small niche known as Action Sports, it is my job to know which blogs to pitch for my clients.  It's a simple formula: great writing draws loyal readership, a loyal readership continues to grow into an obsessive fan base, a high circulating fan base results in instant gratification traffic to my clients' Web pages and hopefully, increases the companys' bottom lines as a whole so they can continue to invest in PR.

As a result a good chunk of my day is spent reading through travel blogs, outdoor gear sites and fun gadget review blogs.  I have undertaken the task of searching the blogosphere in its entirety, to bring you the best of the best of Travel and Outdoor Gear (I couldn't help but throw in a couple unrelated goodies as well).

  1. The Gear Junkie- Stephen Regenold writes of adventure, the newest in gear and destinations.
  2. Practical Travel Gear- practical travel gear.  The man has traveled enough to know.
  3. TreeHugger- inspire your Green efforts.
  4. Outdoorzy- gear reviews and outdoor destination ideas.
  5. Backcountry's The Goat-snarky coverage of the latest and greatest in outdoor gear and news.
  6. National Geographic Adventure blog- up to the minute tips and news coverage from the same editors the magazine is famous for.
  7. Boing Boing- a self titled "Directory of Wonderful Things"; they ain't lying!
  8. Boing Boing Gadgets- Boing Boing's geeky little brother.
  9. Gear Diary- I like their use of video blogging and their funny contributers.
  10. Valleywag- hilarious, crude, all the writers are bullies and as a PR pro, I know better then to ever pitch this blog.  Overall they do a great job of making fun of Silicon Valley.

If you're a bloggie like me, you should check out NewsGator.  This tracking tool that may not be well known outside the PR or Tech industries, is great for storing all your online reading in one place.  You simply subscribe to your favorite blogs and Web sites and the feeds will be delivered straight to NewsGator's platform- pictured above.
