With all the chatter about a possible "cure" for celiac or gluten intolerance, it poses an interesting question. How many people who can't eat gluten would actually take a pill for it? Certainly the drug companies assumption is that most people would, or they would not bother getting into the gluten-free drug game.
Living gluten-free is certainly a challenge and it is more than a diet - it's a lifestyle. However, by the time a "magic" pill for celiac hits the scene, gluten-free food options might be so plentiful and inexpensive that a drug would cost more. On average it takes about five years for serious side effects to be known about new medication. That means that some in our community are likely ten years away from trying a drug. They will allow others to be gluten-free guinea pigs instead.
