The Culinary Center of Kansas City is the most widely known school for cooking classes in the area. It is located in Old Overland Park, right off Sante Fe and 79th Street at 7920 Sante Fe. The Culinary Center features a wide variety of cooking courses ranging from classes for someone who is trying to figure out how to boil water to advanced courses in Thai, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Mediterrean, and American Regional cooking.
The Executive Chef at the Culinary Center is Matt Chatfield, a veteran of a number of restaurants in the area. He teaches many classes and prepares a public lunch every Tuesday. Helping him teach are a number of chefs from some of the best restaurants in the city, including Matt's wife, Sophie, Chef Cody Hogan, Chef Gary Hild, and Chef Richard McPeake. Each instructor provides their own unique take on cooking and all are more than happy to help culinary students trying to learn how to cook.
Another great resource is the University of Missouri Kansas City's Communiversity. Communiversity lets people in the community become instuctors and teach about areas of interest to them. This includes all types of regional and international cuisine, classes on going vegetarian, and courses on cooking for a healthy lifestyle.
Lastly, for those looking for more serious instruction, Johnson County Community College's Hospitality Management program is recognized as one of the best for chef instruction in the United States. There is also an Art Institutes International program in Kansas City for those who aspire to gain a degree from that famous institution.
