I have a new go to farmer’s market.

This weekend, I went out in search of seven onions to make some caramelized onion recipes and I decided to try the Overland Park Farmer’s Market, in Old Overland Park.  The Overland Park Farmer’s Market has always been amongst the top markets in the area, but much to my surprise, the Overland Park Farmer’s Market has become a lot better this year.

In the past, its vendors have sometimes had only half-filled tables and only a small percentage of it was locally grown produce.  This year, things have changed.  There were still non-local goods, but for the most part, the food was grown in the seller’s farm or backyard.  Very little of it was grown farther than an hour away, which is not too bad for the middle of Kansas City.

Even more impressive was the selection.  Every vendor’s stall was filled to capacity with tomatoes, onions, peppers, potatoes radishes, honey and even Asian herbs and vegetables.  It was nice to see that type of variety.

Also, I am happy to report that the vendors were more than happy to haggle.  I needed a lot of onions, so I was able to talk one vendor into giving me a price break, which I happily accepted!

In case you were wondering, those onions are going to get caramelized for use in several recipes.

To caramelize onions, all you need is:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 large onion, sliced thin
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • (optional) herbs, peppers, sugar

In a skillet over medium-high heat, melt the butter and add the onions and salt.  Saute the onions until they start to turn translucent.  Cover the skillet and reduce the heat to low.  Cook the onions for 45-60 minutes or until the onions are nicely brown and sweet.
