Veggies make the best juice!

You bought a juicer!  Awesome!

Or maybe you didn’t and you’re blending and straining your juice a la Kevin Gianni.

Either way, I say congratulations to you for taking a great big step towards health and wellness!

Here are a few pointers to help ensure that you are getting the most out of your produce:

~It is best to use organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible.  Who wants pesticides in their juice?!?

~Always clean the fruits and vegetables you plan to juice.  I like to use Environné’s Fruit and Vegetable Wash to clean my produce.  You can find it at Trader Joe’s or purchase it from their website.

Keep these things in mind when juicing the following fruits and veggies:

~Apples should be scrubbed and cored.
~All citruses should be peeled.  However, retain white inner peel as much as possible—it is rich in bioflavonoids, cancer and heart disease fighters.
~Peel carrots if you’re not using organic, otherwise scrub them clean.  Discard the long green leaves at the end.
~Scrub celery and keep the leaves on.

Lastly, to help you have a happy juicing experience (one you’ll want to repeat tomorrow):

~Clean and chop all fruits and veggies to be juiced before you begin.  It will save you lots of time and keep your countertops organized.

~Do all your juicing for the day in the morning.  Store juice in an airtight container in the refrigerator.  Yes, the juice will lose some nutrients over time.  But this practice will make juicing less of a chore and you will be more likely to drink fresh juice if it is already made.  Just make sure that you drink it within 24 hours.

~Remove and wash your juicer parts soon after juicing.  It is much easier to rinse them clean.  Otherwise, you’ll be scrubbing like crazy later.

Hope these little pointers help.  Juice on!
