Clint Eastwood is an excellent movie star. Clint Eastwood is an excellent director. Eastwood’s son Kyle scored his latest film: ‘Gran Torino’. This begs the question: How long until Clint has been so fruitful and multi-talented that the only last name in his film’s credits will be his own? Although none of us can wait for the movie starring, written, produced, scored, filmed, and directed by Eastwood (which will surely and simply be titled Scowl), for now we can settle with ‘Gran Torino’ and help its DVD gross out some, not that it needs it.
In this latest film Eastwood plays a crotchety Korean war veteran named Walt Kowalski who is mourning the recent loss of his wife. Sure the character is just dirty Harry with some hip fractures thrown in, but he’s consistently funny and intimidating. Over the course of the film he goes from being foul-mouthed and racist to foul-mouthed and tolerant. In between these emotional states Walt realizes that he has almost no connection with his biological children and grandkids. When a neighboring Hmong teenager is pressured by a gang into stealing Walt’s car, the two cross paths with deeply touching results. There are moments where you’ll wish you had a Walt in your life to smack you in the back of your head when you’re acting like an idiot. When the gang continues to threaten his neighborhood, he takes matters into his own hands. Everyone knows that when Clint Eastwood has a problem in his hand, it won’t be a problem for much longer.
A short documentary on the DVD features the correlation between manhood and the titular automobile. This disc is one of the first great films of 2009, and if you miss it Eastwood might come after you.
