Earlier this year, at a popular Dove Lewis event called Boutiques Unleashed (donations go to their very important pet loss program) I had the rare opportunity to meet a therapy goat. Her name is Gracie and she’s part of the Dove Lewis’ Animal Assisted Therapy & Education (DLAATE) Program.
Since that event, the important therapy work that dogs do continues to come up in conversations with many friends and colleagues. Similar to Dove Lewis’ Animal Assisted Therapy & Education (DLAATE) Program, the Delta Society is another organization that is dedicated to improving people's health and well-being through positive interactions with animals.
There are so many stories about the positive impact dogs have when visiting patients at hospitals or helping children simply by sitting next to them when they’re reading a book out loud (dogs don’t judge on how well the story is read…). Just in the past few months, You Tube videos have been passed around of a dog that gave seniors hope.
The Delta Society has some workshops coming up after the holidays for folks that are considering this for their pets and you don’t want to miss this if you’re planning to be a pet partner this year. A 2010 New Year’s resolution perhaps?
DON’T MISS THIS UPCOMING WORKSHOP: The Delta Society Pet Partners Workshop will be held at Brookshill Historic Church (www.brookshill.com) Jan 9-10. This seminar is for humans only who are interested in becoming registered Pet Partners. Cost is $125 and includes the Pet Partners Team Training Manual, and the first PP Evaluation at no extra cost. Instructors are Lynda Standley and Laura Wilson. Together they have over 24 years experience working with Therapy Animals.
