In front of 9,798 fans at the Verizon Center tonight, the Washington Mystics hoped to narrow the gap between themselves and the Eastern Conference leading Indiana Fever. Tough Indiana defense and Tamika Catchings, however, increased the Fever’s margin and helped them rise to 12-3, while the Mystics now must come to terms with a .500 record. They fell to the not-so-friendly highball, 7-7. The final score was 82-70.
The Mystics got off to a fast start by pushing the ball upcourt early and taking an 11-8 lead, but Indiana’s defense, punctuated by double teams and traps, smothered any early Mystics’ hopes. Indiana’s defense is their bread and butter. They limit opponents to a meager 69 points per game. Additionally, center Tammy Sutton-Brown caught fire for the Fever with 9 first-quarter points to give Indiana a 24-17 lead after ten minutes.
In the second quarter, forward Crystal Langhorne turned on the jets as the Mystics went on a 10-0 run to take a 30-29 lead, but All-Star and perennial WNBA superstar forward Tamika Catchings helped her team counter with a 12-2 run. She finished with a double-double, 28 career-high points and 10 rebounds. During that run, turnovers helped destroy the Mystics. At halftime, the score was 41-34 in favor of the Fever, and the Mystics never recovered.
For the Fever, forward Ebony Hoffman added 16 points and 7 rebounds to Tammy Sutton-Brown’s 16 points and 9 boards and Catching’s big night. For the Mystics, the top performers, not surprisingly, were Langhorne (15 points and 2 rebounds), Alana Beard (13 and 9) and Lindsey Harding (17 and 5).
On Thursday, the Mystics take on the Chicago Sky at home at 7:00 pm. The game will also be broadcast on ESPN2.
