DVD cover of 'Earth'
This edition of “Animation Friday” is my second article this week regarding those ’70 shows. Yesterday, I announced the upcoming release of “The Norman Lear Collection,” which looks like it will be a great set today of classic shows from the king of 1970s comedy.

Today’s topic is “Schoolhouse Rock! Earth,” which will be released next Tuesday and is a new environmental-based collection of 13 short animated films from the folks who brought us the animated “Schoolhouse Rock!” educational shorts in the 1970s. The lyrics “Conjunction Junction, what’s your function” are stuck in my head and “I’m Just a Bill” truly helped me in law school.

Uber-environmentalist Al “I really hate Florida” Gore would love the messages in these songs and how they are presented; his wife Tipper would approve of the lyrics. Further, it would make a nice Earth Day gift to put in the reusable grocery bags that supermarkets distribute then.

Three adult polar bears and a baby polar bear, who is a “cub” reporter, perform and also introduce the songs. The catchiest in a great group is one on recycling that is called “The Trash Can Band.” This features a solo by Dolly (milk) Carton. No, she does not have back-up singers called The Jugs.

Lessons from “Band” include sorting and recycling the bottles and cans that are in the band, refilling water containers rather than buying new containers of water, and buying one large bag of chips rather than several smaller bags.

Other segments provide a primer on climate change, show ways to conserve energy, and educate us about wind and solar power. Additionally saving water generally and cutting just a minute off of a shower are common themes. Learning truly has never been this much fun.

The nit-picky portion of this review, which recognizes that “Earth” is a simply a fun cartoon, will start with the fact that this disc that promotes conserving natural resources comes in traditional plastic DVD packing, rather than the smaller and more eco-friendly packing that was used for the DVD set of Gore’s movie about the climate change, “An Inconvenient Truth.”

Speaking of climate change, this is the proper term for the environmental changes that are occurring. “Earth” uses this term a few times but mostly uses “global warming.” This is likely because it is the more common and better understood term for this concept.

Please feel free to use the relatively eco-friendly methods of adding comments to this entry or e-mailing me at tvdvdguy@gmail.com if you have any questions regarding this great DVD.
