Top DVD choices for Valentine's Day
Writing my entry on the first season of the 1960s fantasy sitcom "I Dream of Jeannie" got me thinking about the great romances that developed on the sitcoms of that era. The facts that the attractions between these characters developed slowly and were based on love, rather than lust, were nice. This is the last era in which TV shows portrayed funny and nice pure courtships.
As such, I recommend DVD sets of these great shows as Valentine's Day gifts. The 1960s fantasy sitcom "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir," which is on my wishlist of shows that I would love to see released on DVD, belongs on this list as well but has not been released on DVD.
5. "My Favorite Martian" This early depiction of an alien-human June-November bromance earned a place on my list because these heterosexual male characters developed a strong bond that caused them to sacrifice a great deal and risk jail and many other bad fates.
4. "F Troop" Watching tomboy Wrangler Jane aggressively pursue the bumbling, clueless, and not very macho Captain Parmenter was hilarious. This was a nice role reversal that lead to very chaste dating.
3. "That Girl" Anne Marie finding an attractive, polite, charming, and successful man who returned her affection within a few days of moving to New York City was almost more of a fantasy than the sitcoms with genies, witches, and Martians.
Watching the many milestones of their relationship, which included meeting each others' parents and having their first big fight but did not seem to include a pre-martial "first time," was good innocent fun. The build-up to their wedding was great.
2. "Get Smart" The romance between Agent 99 and Maxwell Smart was similar to the one between Wrangler Jane and Captain Parmenter but took a little longer to develop. They were also an early couple that had to learn how to work together; facing constant danger (and loving it) added to the challenge.
1. "I Dream of Jeannie" Yet again, a strong woman who was more attractive than her main squeeze won her man through patience and strong support and love. This romance even survived a Jackie Oesque fiancee, starlet Bootsie Nightingale, and magically conjured suitors. This is not to mention the women who Jeannie turned into monkeys and poodles.
As an aside, the DVD sets are an alternative to fans of the show for whom buying a Jeannie bottle is impractical.
I welcome your thoughts on this list as additions to this entry or as e-mail to tvdvdguy@gmail.com.
