'Atlantis' explorers

Before sharing my thoughts on the DVD sets of the first two seasons of "Stargate: Atlantis," I want to thank the person or persons behind the website Subduction leads to Orogeny for posting the portion of my entry on Tuesday that mentioned my interview with Shaun Daily on TV Talk tomorrow.

I am sure that the apparent McKay tendencies in this "Atlantis" fan or fans was pleased that I had to look up both words; the website title seems to state that withdrawal leads to making mountains. My best, and most likely wrong, wrong, wrong, guess is that this refers to the cancellation of "Atlantis" prompting strong opposition. Just remember which character blew up some planets. LOL

The other "Jericho" rangers and I have a terrific and valued relationship, but it is an open one. I would love to have the gaters welcome me to their ranks; I have been a huge Stargate fan from the beginning on Showtime and even own the complete DVD set of the cartoon series "Stargate: Infinity."

Anyway, "Atlantis" definitely is one of those spectacularly produced shows with a continuing storyline that is definitely worth owning on DVD. I have referred back to the sets when I do not recall exactly what happened in an in an earlier season that was significant in a later season. The very surprising revelations regarding a major character in Season Four provides an
excellent example of this.

Just as "Stargate: SG-1" presented unique slants on Egyptian, Norse, and Arthurian mythologies, "Atlantis" delves into the explanation for the technology that created the lost city of Atlantis and why it was lost. Further, Joe Flanigan continues the tradition of macho and very wry Stargate leading men in his flawless portrayal of military commander John Sheppard.

I will say as well that Torri Higginson as Dr. Weir, who was the first of three commanders, was my top leader and definitely had one of the all-time great exit storylines. "SG-1" veteran Amanda Tapping, who played her successor, might have beat her out if the writers had given her a larger role in "Atlantis."

Season One of "Atlantis" did a great job establishing the mythology and introducing a daunting foe right off. The geek in me also shared the excitement of the characters as they regularly found new advanced technology and worked to understand and use it properly.

Season Two brought the unexpected and somewhat puzzling exit of a character who I would love to see reappear in tomorrow's finale. It also established the pattern of Sheppard and his team overcoming great odds after their treks to new worlds but not unduly strange civilizations almost inevitably leads to impending doom.

The DVD sets are also full of great extras that include a recap of Season One, a look at the actors who play the evil life-sucking Wraith, and character profiles. The ones that writer/producer Martin Grero hosted were my favorites.

I would also like to comment on two aspects of the current season. The "I Dream of Jeannie" fan in me loved the reference to "Major Nelson" in a recent episode. I also liked the clever way that last Friday's episode lead into tomorrow's series finale but did not like the overall "CSI: Atlantis" aspect of the show. It seemed that one of the other truly infinite possibilities regarding the generally very good concept would have been better. I do appreciate that it was very true to the Stargate spirit.

I am very eager to see the new Stargate series and the "Atlantis" direct-to-DVD movies.

Please feel free to share comments and questions as additions to this entry or as e-mail to tvdvdguy@gmail.com. I also apologize if I got anything wrong; I simply have not started the Stargate studies that I intended to begin. This project is still on my list.
