My initial thought regarding the six-disc 23-episode DVD set of the second season of the scifi teen angst drama "Kyle XY" (Kyle) is that star Matt Dallas was robbed if the Kids' Choice Awards have a best smile category and he did not win. His sincere and goofy smile alone would win him a date with any teenage girl and the approval of her parents.
My second thought is that, as was the case regarding the similar program "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" about which I wrote recently, is that not being a teen or a parent of one handicapped me regarding writing about Kyle.
I liked Kyle better than "Secret Life" but would have enjoyed more "Roswell" and less "After School Special." The young actors on Kyle all do a great job, even if the character of Kyle's foster brother became minimally less appealing as he matured throughout the season. I do look forward to more dance routines with him and Kyle in Season Three, which premieres tomorrow.
I considered the first half of the season to be superior to the second. It involved the revelations regarding wunderkind Kyle's mysterious origins and had some decent intrigue and peril. I also loved the homage to the classic Sherlock Holmes mystery stories.
The second half focused more on the After School Special aspects of the show regarding teen dating, the loss of virginity, and teen-parent conflicts; however, ending the season at the prom was very appropriate.
I did find the euphemisms for self-gratification very amusing and am embarrassed to admit that I will be making pancakes after I post this entry but will not have sausage.
I would have liked the new character Jessi XX, who was the female counterpart of Kyle, to have posed more of a threat. I acknowledge that the producers might have considered that too intense for its younger audience.
The special feature that explained that the stories were based on plausible science that was described well was my favorite. It also provided a nice recap of the show.
