I bought the DVD set of the original 24 episodes of "The Jetsons" on Friday and was surprised that it was identified as the the complete first season; the original series only ran for the 1962-1963 television season, and new syndicated episodes did not air until 1985. Hanna Barbera obviously considers the syndicated episodes to be a continuation of the series after a 22-year hiatus, rather than a new series that is a remake of the original.
Not identifying the set of the original Jetsons episodes as the complete series was contrary to the almost universal practice of identifying the DVD set of a series that ran for only one full season or a partial season as a complete series. These sets seem to contain an average of 10 episodes.
Fox "failedcoms" are a good example of shows that are out as complete series and that I recommend buying. I actually like these because I often enjoyed the programs and know that they will never run in regular syndication and at most will air as Sunday afternoon marathons on the FX network. Additionally, these sets often contain episodes that did not air during the show's limited run. The failedcoms "Greg the Bunny" and "Kitchen Confidential" are examples of these shows.
Again, there is nothing wrong with buying a DVD sets that is identified as a complete series; you should just be sure that you know how many episodes that you are getting. Fans of Do Not Disturb can likely look forward to a complete series set of six episodes and an interview with Jerry O'Connell.
