The National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky has undergone a major remodeling and expansion.
The $10 million facelift was official unveiled on 47,000 square feet of expanded museum and 17,000 square feet of remodeled space.
“To go from an idea, which originally was what the Corvette was, to both the museum and this expansion involves a lot of people,”
said Wendell Strode, executive director of the museum.
Fans from across the nation, across the Commonwealth of Kentucky and from across the street at the General Motors Bowling Green Assembly plant gathered to celebrate the ribbon cutting.
A new gift shop, library and archives center, a conference center, The Corvette Cafe and Corvette Boulevard have been added to the distinctively shaped landmark museum.
Corvette buyers can request delivery at the Corvette Museum as an option and the expansion includes a VIP buyer area.
The Corvette Museum will celebrate is 15th anniversary in September.
Christy Thomas, has worked at the museum since it opened and can remember a time when a bigger museum was just a fantasy.
“I never would have dreamed it,” she said. “It was such an accomplishment building the original museum ... and we really did outgrow the space we had.”
As the museum's popularity and following grew, legions of Corvette fans pitched in to make the expansion a reality.
“It’s all because of Corvette enthusiasts,” Strode said. “This is something they wanted.”
Began in November 2007, the expansion brings the museum now to measure a total of 115,000 square feet.
“Certainly, we are thankful that the Corvette plant is here and part of the Bowling Green community and just across the street from the Corvette museum,” Strode said. “It provides us with ... a great asset and we really want that to continue.”
