Patrick Stewart, certainly the most talented actor associated with the Star Trek franchise, celebrates his 69th birthday today, July 13. Since his triumphant performance in Macbeth in 2007-08, the world is more than ever his oyster, as the range of projects in which he is currently involved attests.
He is currently starring, with Ian McKellen, in Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot at Theatre Royal Haymarket in London's West End until August 9.
Stewart also is featured as "the Narrator" in Ricky Gervais' The Invention of Lying, coming to theaters in September. As to ordinary narrating, Stewart is the voice of The Shape of the World, an acclaimed six-part PBS documentary on the history of mapmaking, which will be released on DVD in August. He is also a guest voice (along with Json Isaacs) in the new video game "Castelvania: Lords of Shadow" from Konami, set for release in 2010 for Xbox and PlayStation. Check out his voiceover on the game trailer at gametrailers.com.
Alan Petrucelli, Pittsburgh Stage and Screen Examiner, recently reviewed Playing Shakespeare, a DVD set of nine Royal Shakespeare Company master classes on performing Shakespeare that features Stewart along with Ian McKellen, Ben Kingsley, Judi Dench and others.
The Royal Shakespeare Company's 2008 production of Hamlet, with Stewart as Claudius, will air in the U.S. on BBCAmerica next year.
