According to the ratings, hardly anyone on this planet was watching ABC's summer series Defying Gravity. I'm not a Nielsen family, so they didn't count my vote which is a shame because I never missed an episode.
When it first premiered, it was referred to as Grey's Anatomy in space. More soap opera than space opera, it followed the lives of a group of astronauts sent on a six year exploratory mission. In order to get the full backstory on each character, the episodes were loaded with flashbacks and I admit I skipped over most of those.
In order to make things more exciting, the writers added a secret entity on the ship which might or might not be benign, but is causing the crew members to hallucinate bad things. As for the promised, soapy side, well, once they were all on their way, they were handed patches to suppress their libido, so this wasn't ever going to turn into a sexual romp. Maybe that's why people stopped watching -- because the only sexual contact was in the flashbacks and the only violence was from a careless accident.
Was Defying Gravity just too wholesome? Our Houston Space News Examiner says the show never had a chance and he lists plenty of reasons why. And though I agree with most of his conclusions, I still enjoyed the show and was looking forward to learning what was in Pod 4. Now that ABC has canceled the series, I guess we'll never know.
ETA: Or not! Futon Critic is now reporting that a rep for the series says it has not be canceled, it simply doens't have a slot on the TV schedule anytime in the near future. Huh? What exactly does that mean?
Is anyone mounting a Save Our Show campaign for the poor lost souls of Defying Gravity? Come on. If we don't save these guys, they'll be doomed to wander the universe forever, with no hope of getting home.
