There is no one like Oprah when it comes to getting the point across! Yesterday was a very exciting day in the organizing world as
Oprah Winfrey launched her coast-to-coast
“Clean Up Your Messy House Tour” with the aid of organizing expert, Peter Walsh. I couldn’t miss this debut and tuned in to watch as Oprah and Peter touted the importance of being organized in today’s uncertain world.
Oprah’s
Clutter Crew descended on Manhattan in a slew of "Clean Up Your Messy House Tour" clutterbugs filled with organizational goodies and surprised residents by offering to organize their homes on the spot. In this episode, three New Yorker's homes were completely transformed one-by-one, much to the owners' delight. The results were astounding as the pictures detail below.
This is such a fantastic opportunity for anyone needing organizational guidance and doesn't have a clue where to begin. On Oprah's
website, Peter has outlined a
step-by-step organizational plan for viewers to undertake as the six-month tour unfolds. The best part – Oprah is promoting
money-saving deals to get viewers on their way to clutter freedom! Both,
The Container Store and
Snapfish.com , have offered exclusive deals for viewers interested in integrating some of the organizing solutions outlined into their own households.
In case you missed the show, here are some of the great tips revealed in this first episode.
GENERAL ORGANIZING TIPS
1. Before beginning organization, ask yourself, “What do I want from this space?”
2. Ask yourself, “Am I valuing my possessions?”
3. Ask yourself, “Am I saying one thing to myself about my habits and my life and doing another?”
4. Always store like with like.
5. Create zones for specific functions. (i.e. the mail zone.)
6. Start small. Begin by tackling a manageable area that you can organize relatively quickly. Small chunks over time will be less overwhelming.
7. To hang children’s artwork, get a variety of small rug squares and use double stick tape to hang the squares to the walls. You can pin the artwork to the rugs as a creative display board. 8. With clothing, hangers should all be facing one direction. As you wear the clothes, hang them back up in the opposite direction. In six months, check to see what you have not worn. If you haven’t worn it, take this opportunity to decide if you really need it. If not, donate or sell locally. 9. In small spaces, create dispersed light. “When you light everything, you light nothing,” says Candice Olsen of HGTV’s Divine Design, who is providing design guidance for the tour.
