Three minutes into the new Showtime series “Nurse Jackie”, Edie Falco, playing the title character, butts heads with a cocky doctor who has misdiagnosed a patient and “seen this hospital drama before” dread comes over you. But minutes later, everything you’ve ever seen in a medical television show is turned on its head.
Jackie happens to be a profanity spewing, pill-popping, acerbic headcase with a heart who invites drama into her life at every turn and has more than a few secrets.
Nurse Jackie is surrounded by a cast of characters who are equally unpredictable, including a sexually inappropriate (in a funny way) resident, a doctor who cares more about cutting people open than saving them, and an intern who is obviously out of her element.
What makes the series, which premieres tonight at 10:30EST, work is that although there are many twists and out-of-left field moments, they all somehow make sense in Jackie’s life. The subtle surprises pave the way for a bright future for a series that is a perfect mix of unexpected laughs and quirky drama.
