With the recent premiere of “V”, a remake of the 80’s science fiction thriller, I’ve been thinking about all things sci-fi. Yesterday I posted an article on the beautiful and sexy women of sci-fi. It seems only fitting that I give the men of science fiction their due as well. So here are my picks for the sexiest men of sci-fi motion pictures and television. The list begins with number 25 and ends with my number one pick.

Joel Gretsch proved his acting chops as Tom Baldwin on the cult sci-fi classic television series “4400.” He showed a range of depth and emotion from protective father to loving husband, dependable partner, to angry patriot all the while looking absolutely gorgeous with his rugged good looks and piercing eyes.

William Shatner - - the original Captain James T. Kirk of the Starship Enterprise - - captured the hearts and minds of housewives back in the 70’s. He had all the right stuff. His bad boy persona appealed to the rebellious generation of the time. But he also had heart, soul, strength, and intelligence. Need I say more?

Gretsch wasn’t the only heartthrob on “4400.” There was also Billy Campbell, whose tall, dark and handsome brooding character Jordan Collier alluded description. Part hero and part villain, the audience never really understood where his alliances fell. But the mystery simply added to his overall mystique.

James Masters was the polar opposite of heroic vampire Angel in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Yet with all his nastiness, cruelty, and lack of decency, he wouldn’t be ignored. When Angel’s David Boreanaz left to start his own show, Spike stepped up to the plate to defend their joint ladylove. He went all out, even enduring the tortures of hell to regain his soul to be worthy of her. That’s a man worth loving to hate.

Move over Captain Picard, there’s another hunk on the bridge in “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” Number One, as played by Jonathan Frakes was soulful, mischievous, strong, courageous, and just plain gorgeous to look at.

Chris Pine filled some mighty big shoes when he took over the role of James T. Kirk for the prequel motion picture “Star Trek”. While I didn’t particularly like the way the film portrayed Kirk as a youth, there was no denying the actor's charisma. Pine didn’t try to copy a legend, which would have been a huge mistake. Instead, he took the role and made it all his own; looking oh so good while doing it.

Heath Ledger didn’t look attractive as the Joker in the motion picture “Batman: The Dark Knight.” Yet there was something magnetic about his performance. Women knew what lurked beneath all of the makeup; a tortured, brooding soul not so different from many of the characters he played. He was simply hard to resist.

There is a tie in this category. There is certainly no denying the stunning beauty of “The Vampire Diaries” Ian Somerhalder. One look in those big blue eyes and any woman would be hypnotized into submission. As bad boy brother Damon Salvatore to Paul Wesley and his good brother, Stefan Salvatore, he threatens to steal every scene. As bad and good vampires, respectively, the combination of the Salvatore brothers is a hard one to beat.

Casper Van Dien has never received the recognition he deserves as an actor, partly due to his many turns in sci-fi films like “Starship Troopers”. However, his chiseled jaw, piercing eyes, and rockin’ bod certainly come together to earn him a place on this list.

Brad Pitt changed up his all-American good looks to play the psychotic Jeffrey Goines in “12 Monkeys” and it was the first time I switched from tall, dark, and handsome to blond, blue-eyed, and unusual. Over the course of his considerable acting career, Pitt has grown even more rugged, handsome, and dashing. Voted “The Sexiest Man Alive” twice sort of says it all.

Eric Bana took a turn as the hulk’s alter ego Bruce Banner in the first film of that name. Although critics and audiences alike panned the film, Bana’s work stood out. It earned him deeper roles that allowed him to stretch his acting muscles; all the while gaining fans for his soft-spoken manner and rugged good looks.

Dean Cain filled the shoes of Superman’s alter ego Clark Kent in TV's “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” and women all over the world fell in love with the superhero all over again. There was something about his unassuming manner, natural charm, and amazing smile that made him the natural choice for the Superman of the 90’s. Of course, he didn’t look bad in those tights either.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson would not necessarily be someone you’d equate with sci-fi. However, he made his mark in the genre as the scorpion king of “The Mummy” and the film “The Scorpion King.” Suddenly, a receding hairline was ultra sexy, or was those unbelievable muscles and rock hard abs? Who really cares because this man’s not only got great looks but a kind heart and a keen sense of humor too.

Whether or not “Lost” fits into the sci-fi category or not, there was no way to leave Daniel Dae Kim off the list. His Jin Kwon started off looking very much like a wife abuser. However, as the story expanded, it was made clear he was not. This devoted husband, in fact, sacrificed it all so his wife and baby could survive the mysterious island. His stunning good looks made him someone worth watching and his talent didn’t disappoint either.

The moment Sendhil Ramamurthy walked on screen as Mohinder Suresh in television’s “Heroes,” my heart skipped a beat. He looked for all the world like a god that came to earth in response to every woman’s deepest, darkest desires. But the actor is more than the sum of his parts. He also possesses amzing talent. It’s a killer combination.

The newest Batman, Christian Bale, has earned his bad boy reputation, which unfortunately lost him a few points on this list. Still, there is no denying this hunk’s sex appeal. He makes both a believable devil may care Bruce Wayne as well as the alter ego and dark knight. Now if he could just learn to treat people will more respect, this actor might actually conquer the sci-fi world.

Matthew McConnaughy shaved off his luscious blond curls and took a turn bald in the science fiction film “Reign of Fire.” As dragon slayer Denton Van Zan, McConnaughy brought strength and a bad ass attitude to the film. It worked for him just fine, although women still prefer his pretty boy romantic comedy roles.

Kevin Sorbo embodied Hercules in the television series by the same name. His physique was sculpted perfectly for the role but it was his heart and his soul that made his character work. Of course, the fact that he wasn’t bad to look at helped as well. After “Hercules” he went on to star as the dashing captain of “Andromeda.” Once there, he sealed the deal as one of sci-fi’s finest hunks.

There’s another tie on the list because anyone would be hard pressed to choose between the Winchester brothers of TV’s “Supernatural.” Jensen Ackles brings humor and grit as the oldest brother, Dean, who would do anything to protect his younger sibling. Jared Padalecki brings intelligence and heart to younger brother, Sam, who fights to resist the demon blood within him. This is a duo that makes television worth watching.

David Boreanaz was the vampire with a soul and heart on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” He fell hard for the spunky blond who was tasked with killing off his kind. Their love story turned into one for the ages. Eventually, Angel moved on and developed his own show by the same name. It was then that all the layers of the character could fully be explored. That only made him more beautiful to behold.

Former model and soap star, Josh Duhamel, may have seemed like an unlikely choice for a military hero in “Transformers” and “Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen.” But anyone who doubted his ability to carry off the role had obviously never seen him act. His talent belies his striking good looks. “All My Children Fans” flocked to theaters in droves just to get another look at their lost Leo.

While George Clooney might not have been the best Batman in the group, he was certainly the most handsome. There is simply nothing to dislike about this man, well except perhaps for his politics.

Tom Welling’s Clark Kent has grown up on television in the hit “Smallville.” He is just now coming into his role as the ultimate action hero. Nonetheless, he has maintained all of the mystery, charm, and intrigue of Superman for more than eight seasons. That’s no small trick. It also seems that he only gets better looking and more charming with each passing day.

If Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman was perfectly cast, so was that of Christopher Reed and his turn as Superman. He was the quintessential nerdy Clark Kent and the to-die-for ruggedly handsome Superman. No one has, or will, fill those blue tights with the same strength, humor, or charm. He exemplified everything the superhero stood for not only on screen but also in real life.

Although I’m not a fan of the look of Wolverine and don’t find the character all that sexy on his own, there is no denying the appeal of the actor portraying him. Hugh Jackman breathes life into every character he plays and makes audiences believe in him. As Van Helsing, he changed the look of an age-old vampire hunter. As Wolverine he always managed to save the day. Great acting and good looks combined make him the perfect choice as the ruling sci-fi hunk.

There you have my choices. If I left someone out that you would have added to the list, feel free to do so in the comment section below.
